My Father Stopped Speaking to Me After I Left Medical School to Care for My Sick Boyfriend – 5 Years Later, He Came to Take Me Home, but When He Entered Our Apartment, He Froze and Said, ‘This Can’t Be Real!’

“I was terrified for you.”

That stopped me.

For five years, I had believed his silence came from shame.

Disappointment.

Maybe even contempt.

Now, for the first time, I heard fear.

But fear didn’t excuse what happened afterward.

“You were allowed to be scared,” I said. “You were allowed to believe I was making a mistake.”

He looked at me.

“But you didn’t just disagree with me.”

My voice tightened.

“You stopped being my father.”

His expression went blank.

“Alyssa…”

“You thought I was giving up too much, so you gave me up instead?”

Dad looked away.

Then he sat heavily in one of the training chairs.

“I thought you would call.”

I laughed bitterly.

“I did.”

He looked down.

“I know.”

“Then what were you waiting for?”

His hands folded together.

When he finally looked up, his eyes were wet.

“For you to admit I had been right.”

I didn’t know what to say.

“At first,” he added.

“And later?”

He looked at Grandpa’s bag.

“Later, I didn’t know how to answer once you stopped asking me to forgive you.”

Five years ago, I would have demanded an apology.

Now I wanted something else.

I wanted him to see the life he had refused to see.

“Come back to the apartment.”

“Why?”

“Because you’ve spent five years blaming Elliot for a decision he actually tried to undo.”

That got his attention.

Back home, Elliot didn’t soften anything.

“When I recovered, I begged Alyssa to reconsider medical school.”

Dad stared at him.

“She did?”

“She met with them.”

Dad looked at me.

I nodded.

“Once.”

Elliot placed the workshop folders on the table.

“I thought I could give her old life back.”

Then he looked at Dad.

“But it wasn’t mine to give back.”

Dad went quiet.

His eyes landed on Grandpa’s black bag.

“I did that too,” he whispered.

“What?”

His thumb moved across the crooked brass latch.

“I raised you believing family came first.”
