My Father Stopped Speaking to Me After I Left Medical School to Care for My Sick Boyfriend – 5 Years Later, He Came to Take Me Home, but When He Entered Our Apartment, He Froze and Said, ‘This Can’t Be Real!’
His eyes filled.
“Your mother died, and I built my life around staying for you.”
He swallowed.
“Then you followed what I taught you, and I punished you because I didn’t approve of the person you chose to stay for.”
I looked at him.
“You were wrong to leave me.”
He nodded.
“But I wasn’t doing everything right either,” I said.
Dad looked surprised.
“I thought loving Elliot meant becoming his entire care plan.”
I gestured toward the equipment around us.
“That’s part of why I do this work now. I teach families that caring for someone doesn’t mean losing yourself completely.”
Dad said nothing.
But this time, he listened.
The following morning, he asked if he could attend my workshop.
Halfway through the session, I found him giving a long explanation about shoulder mechanics to an exhausted caregiver.
After almost three minutes, she interrupted him.
“Doctor, I only asked where my hand is supposed to go.”
I covered my mouth.
Dad blinked.
Then laughed.
“Right. Sorry.”
Afterward, he picked up his briefcase.
Grandpa’s medical bag remained beside mine.
Dad touched the crooked latch.
“Still sticks.”
“Still does.”
He nodded.
Then left the bag where it was.
At the door, he turned.
“What are you teaching Monday?”
I told him.
“Call me afterward.”
He paused.
Then corrected himself.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“I’ll call you.”
That evening, I was packing Grandpa’s bag when my phone rang.
Dad.
I answered.
“So,” he said, “where exactly is the hand supposed to go?”
I sat beside the open bag and smiled.
Then I started explaining.
