I Came Home in Secret to Catch the Woman I Trusted. The Cameras Revealed the Monster Had Been Sleeping Beside Me.105
Some things were not mine to judge.
The sixty-two-million-dollar trust Daniel had rejected decades earlier still existed.
After legal disputes, it became his.
Technically.
Then victims’ claims, restitution orders and judgments consumed most of it.
There was a dark irony in that.
The fortune he had spent his life believing was stolen from him ultimately existed.
And by the time he finally accepted that truth, almost none of it mattered.
But the final surprise came months later.
Not from court.
Not from police.
From Lily.
It was Sophie’s birthday.
The girls and I had begun a tradition of visiting the beach where Sophie used to take them.
Maria came too.
We brought sandwiches, flowers and the ridiculous strawberry cupcakes Sophie loved.
Near sunset, Lily sat beside me in the sand with Bunny under one arm.
The rabbit had been repaired.
Maria stitched the foot again after investigators returned it.
Lily looked at the ocean.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Do you think Mommy knew?”
“Knew what?”
“That you’d find the key.”
I watched the waves.
“I think she hoped I would.”
Lily nodded.
Then frowned.
“There was another one.”
I turned.
“Another what?”
“Key.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
She pointed at Bunny.
“Mommy put two things inside.”
I stared at her.
“No, sweetheart. We found the key.”
She shook her head.
“Not in his foot.”
Maria, sitting a few feet away, slowly lowered her coffee.
Emma looked over.
“Lily?”
Lily turned the rabbit around.
“Mommy showed me.”
Her tiny fingers reached beneath the fabric collar around Bunny’s neck.
There was a seam.
Old.
Almost invisible.
I pulled it apart.
Something tiny slid into my palm.
Not a key.
A memory card.
Maria whispered, “Oh my God.”
Emma crawled closer.
“What is it?”
I didn’t know.
We drove home.
I almost called the detective.
Instead, with both girls beside me and Maria standing behind us, I inserted the card into an offline laptop.
There was one video.
No date.
No title.
I clicked it.
Sophie appeared.
But she wasn’t alone.
Emma was beside her.
Six years old.
Lily was sleeping in Sophie’s lap.
Bunny sat between them.
Sophie looked exhausted.
Then she smiled.
“If you’re watching this, Alex, then somehow all four of you made it to the end.”
I covered my mouth.
All four.
Me.
Emma.
Lily.
Maria.
Sophie looked off camera.
“Come sit down.”
Maria appeared in the video.
The Maria standing behind me gasped.
“I forgot,” she whispered.
On screen, Sophie took Maria’s hand.
“I need you to promise me something.”
Maria nodded.
“If I’m wrong, destroy this and laugh at me someday.”
She smiled.
“If I’m right, keep my girls safe.”
Maria began crying behind me.
Sophie continued.
“I don’t know what Daniel is planning. But I know he has lied about Claire. I know money is missing. And I know somebody has been entering the garage at night.”
She looked down at Lily.
Then at the camera.
“There is something I haven’t written anywhere because I am afraid Daniel has access to everything.”
I leaned closer.
Sophie’s expression changed.
“I changed our estate documents today.”
I froze.
“If something happens to both Alex and me, Daniel Cross has no authority over our children.”
Maria whispered, “What?”
Sophie smiled faintly.
“I named Maria temporary guardian.”
The room went silent.
Maria covered her mouth.
She genuinely had not known.
Sophie continued.
