I Came Home in Secret to Catch the Woman I Trusted. The Cameras Revealed the Monster Had Been Sleeping Beside Me.105

Digital records.

Anything Daniel controlled.

“What does the key open?” my attorney asked.

“I don’t know.”

The answer came the next morning.

Emma did.

I had slept less than an hour when I found her sitting at the breakfast counter.

Lily was asleep against Maria on the sofa.

Emma looked older than nine.

I hated that.

I poured cereal into a bowl.

Neither of us ate.

After several minutes, she asked, “Are you mad at me?”

I nearly dropped the spoon.

“What?”

“For not telling you.”

I went around the counter and knelt beside her.

“Emma, look at me.”

She did.

“You did nothing wrong.”

“But I knew Claire was mean.”

“You were scared.”

“You would have believed me?”

That question hurt because I didn’t immediately know the answer.

Would I have?

Before the cameras?

Before I watched Claire’s face change?

I wanted to tell Emma yes.

I wanted to be the father who always believed his child instantly.

But children know when adults lie.

So I told the truth.

“I should have made you feel safe enough that you never had to wonder.”

Her eyes filled.

I held her.

“I failed you.”

“No, Daddy.”

“Yes.”

She hugged me tighter.

After a while she whispered, “Mommy used to have a key like that.”

I pulled back.

“What?”

“The little key.”

“Where?”

“In her blue box.”

“What blue box?”

“In the old bank.”

Every muscle in my body tightened.

“What old bank?”

“The one with the lion.”

Then I remembered.

Sophie’s grandmother had maintained a safe-deposit box at an old private bank downtown.

The building had two carved stone lions outside.

After her grandmother died, Sophie kept the account.

I hadn’t thought about it in years.

By noon, my attorney and I were standing inside a private vault beneath downtown Los Angeles.

Box 17.

The key fit.

Inside were four things.

A notebook.

A flash drive.
