I Came Home in Secret to Catch the Woman I Trusted. The Cameras Revealed the Monster Had Been Sleeping Beside Me.105

“I also transferred my Mercer Foundation voting shares into a protected trust for Emma and Lily. Alex controls them while he is alive. If Alex dies before the girls are adults, Maria becomes co-trustee with an independent fiduciary.”

Tears blurred the screen.

Sophie had closed Daniel’s trap before he ever sprung it.

Without telling him.

Without telling even Maria.

The plan to steal my family had already failed before Sophie died.

Daniel had murdered her believing he was clearing the final obstacle.

He never knew she had moved the pieces.

But Sophie wasn’t finished.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Alex, there’s one more thing.”

My heart thudded.

“I know you.”

A sad smile.

“You will blame yourself.”

I broke.

She knew me.

Even across death, she knew exactly where my mind would go.

“You’ll think you should have noticed sooner. You’ll replay every argument. Every time I seemed distracted. Every night you worked late.”

She leaned closer.

“Don’t.”

I was crying openly now.

Emma held one of my hands.

Lily held the other.

Sophie continued.

“Trust is not stupidity.”

I closed my eyes.

“Loving someone is not failure.”

My shoulders shook.

“And being deceived does not mean you were weak.”

Maria was crying too.

Then Sophie looked at our daughters.

“What matters is what you do when the truth finally reaches you.”

She kissed Emma’s head.

Then Lily’s.

“If our girls are watching someday, I need them to know one thing.”

Emma covered her mouth.

Sophie’s voice softened.

“You never owe silence to someone who frightens you.”

Emma started sobbing.

“You never have to protect an adult’s secret.”

Lily climbed into my lap.

“And if anyone ever tells you your father would choose them over you…”

Sophie smiled.

“…they don’t know your father.”

That destroyed me.

For three years, I had wondered whether Sophie died thinking I had failed her.

Instead, her final hidden message had defended me to our children.

Even from a future she would never see.

The video continued another minute.

Nothing about Daniel.

Nothing about money.

Only Sophie telling our girls she loved them.

Then she looked at Maria.

“And you.”

Maria laughed through tears on the recording.

“What about me?”

“You’re family whether Alex is smart enough to realize it or not.”

The Maria behind me let out a broken laugh.

On screen, Sophie looked into the camera one final time.

“Take care of one another.”

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Outside the windows, evening settled across the estate.

The same house that had once felt enormous and cold suddenly felt different.

Not because Daniel was gone.

Not because Claire was gone.

Because for the first time since Sophie died, the house no longer felt haunted by questions.

Emma rested her head on my shoulder.

Lily held Bunny.

Maria stood behind us.

I reached back and took her hand.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

She shook her head.

“For doubting you.”

“Mr. Mercer—”

“Alex.”

She smiled through tears.

“Alex.”

I looked at my daughters.

“I need to tell you both something.”

Emma wiped her face.

“What?”

“No more secrets.”

Lily nodded seriously.

“Even surprise birthdays?”

I laughed.

A real laugh.

The first one I could remember in a long time.

“Some secrets are allowed.”

“What about Christmas presents?”

“Those too.”

Emma managed a small smile.

Then she asked, “Can Maria stay?”

Maria immediately looked away.

I understood.

For years, she had lived in my home while carefully reminding everyone she was an employee.

Claire had used that distinction as a weapon.

You’re hired help.

You’re nobody in this family.

I looked at Maria.

Sophie’s words echoed from the laptop.

You’re family whether Alex is smart enough to realize it or not.

I finally realized my wife had been right about one more thing.

“Maria can stay as long as Maria wants.”

Lily jumped up and hugged her.

Emma followed.

Maria began crying again.

And I sat there watching the three of them together.

For years, I had believed the worst day of my life was the morning police told me Sophie was gone.

Then I believed it was the morning I watched Claire frighten my daughters through a hidden camera.

But I had been wrong both times.
