I Came Home in Secret to Catch the Woman I Trusted. The Cameras Revealed the Monster Had Been Sleeping Beside Me.105

“For three years?”

Maria’s face crumpled.

“She said if she died, I was only to give you the envelope if I saw the symbol again.”

I looked at Claire’s bracelet.

The snake.

My stomach turned.

Claire began backing away.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single folded sheet.

On it, Sophie had drawn the bracelet.

Beneath it were seven words.

IF THIS SYMBOL RETURNS, TRUST MARIA.

My knees almost gave out.

There was something written underneath.

Smaller.

Shakier.

DO NOT TRUST THE CAMERAS.

I stared at the sentence.

Claire ran.

She darted toward the foyer.

I caught her near the staircase.

She clawed at my arm.

“Get off me!”

“Why did Sophie draw your bracelet?”

“I don’t know!”

“You said you never knew her!”

“I didn’t!”

“Then why did she know that?”

“I bought it in Paris!”

“Three years after she died?”

Claire stopped struggling.

A voice behind me said, “Alex.”

Daniel.

I turned.

He stood in the hallway.

Calm as ever.

“Police are on their way,” he said.

Claire looked at him.

It lasted less than a second.

But something passed between them.

Recognition.

Communication.

A silent exchange I would have missed any other day.

Daniel approached.

“I’ll take Miss Whitmore to the sitting room until officers arrive.”

“No.”

He stopped.

“I want her where I can see her.”

“That may not be wise.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re emotional.”

Claire smiled.

I looked at Daniel.

For twelve years, I had trusted his judgment.

Suddenly, every reasonable sentence sounded different.

I folded Sophie’s note.

“What do you know about this bracelet?”

He looked at it.

Nothing changed in his expression.

“Nothing.”

Claire exhaled.

Too quickly.

Daniel looked at her.

Again.

Only a fraction of a second.

But enough.

My phone rang.

It was the front gate.

I answered.

“Sir,” the guard said, “Mr. Cross instructed us not to let LAPD onto the property until he personally cleared them.”

I slowly looked at Daniel.

He didn’t move.

I heard myself ask, “Why would you do that?”

His face changed.

Not dramatically.

The concern disappeared.

The loyalty disappeared.

For the first time, I saw the man underneath the uniform.

Daniel sighed.

“Because this could have been handled quietly.”

Maria whispered, “Oh, God.”

Claire closed her eyes.

I stepped backward.

Daniel reached into his jacket.

I moved in front of Maria.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He removed his phone.

Pressed one button.

Every light in the house went out.

Locks slammed throughout the estate.

A metallic sequence echoed down the corridors.

Security shutters began descending over the ground-floor windows.

Daniel had activated lockdown.

My lockdown.

The system I had paid millions to install.

The system designed to keep threats outside.

Now it was keeping us in.

Emergency lights flickered red.

Claire smiled.

“Alex,” Daniel said calmly, “you should have gotten on the plane.”

I wish I could say I reacted like the confident billionaire people described in magazines.

I didn’t.

For one terrible second, I couldn’t move.

Everything I believed about my home had inverted.

The locks belonged to him.

The cameras belonged to him.

The men at the gates answered to him.
