My Son Stayed Quiet About My Mother-in-Law Forcing Him to Clean Her House – He Taught Her a Lesson on Her Birthday
For two years, I thought my son spent every other Saturday enjoying time with his grandmother while I worked. Then one accidental glimpse at a text on his phone revealed what those visits were really like, and when I offered to step in, he asked me not to.
Judith’s smile disappeared before she’d even pulled all the tissue paper from the box.
Around her dining room, the rest of us went quiet.
My mother-in-law had turned 70 that day, and judging by the gifts already stacked beside her chair, she’d been expecting something sentimental from Caleb.
Maybe a framed photograph.
Maybe one of the little wooden projects he’d gotten good at making in school.
Instead, my fourteen-year-old son had given his grandmother rubber gloves, sponges, microfiber cloths, a scrub brush, and a brand-new mop head.
Judith lifted one yellow glove between two fingers.
“What exactly is this?”
Caleb stood across from her, remarkably calm.
“It’s everything you need to clean your house.”
A couple of relatives laughed uncertainly.
Judith didn’t.
“Very funny.”
“I’m not joking.”
Caleb glanced at me, then back at her.
“There’s only one thing missing.”
Judith frowned. “What’s that?”
“Me.”
Nobody laughed that time.
Three weeks earlier, I hadn’t even known there was a problem.
For two years, Caleb had spent every other Saturday at Judith’s house while I worked extra shifts at the hospital.
I thought they enjoyed those weekends.
That was certainly how they had started.
