My Son Stayed Quiet About My Mother-in-Law Forcing Him to Clean Her House – He Taught Her a Lesson on Her Birthday
Judith’s husband, Caleb’s grandfather, had died not long before those visits began, and afterward she struggled with the quiet house. Caleb adored her, and I was grateful they had each other.
Then I accidentally saw a text on Caleb’s phone.
A friend had asked whether he wanted to hang out that Saturday.
Caleb had replied, “Can’t, Grandma has me doing her whole house again. Windows, floors, bathrooms. Takes like 5 hours, every single time.”
I must have read it four times.
That evening, I asked him what he meant.
His first reaction wasn’t anger.
It was embarrassment.
“It’s fine, Mom.”
“Five hours isn’t fine.”
“I can handle it.”
“How long has this been happening?”
His eyes dropped.
That was when I realized I wasn’t going to like the answer.
“Pretty much since I started going there.”
“For two years?”
He shrugged.
I immediately reached for my phone.
Caleb stopped me.
“Please don’t call her.”
“Caleb, she’s been making you clean her house for five hours at a time.”
“I know.”
“And you never told me.”
“I didn’t want you feeling bad about working Saturdays. Or thinking you had to find someone else for me to stay with.”
I stared at him.
He wasn’t eight anymore. He was perfectly capable of spending several hours at home alone.
In fact, we’d discussed exactly that months earlier.
I reminded him.
He looked uncomfortable.
“I know.”
“Then why did you keep going?”
He hesitated.
“Just let me handle Grandma myself.”
There was something different in his voice.
