Six Left Behind Daughters and One Returned White Box Fifteen Years Later

Shannon stood near the end of the long table, her fingers twisting her blue beaded bracelet around her left wrist until her skin turned pink.

She was staring down at a bowl of mixed greens, her shoulders hunched as if she could make herself invisible.

Maya appeared beside her, her cream-colored suit sleeve brushing against Shannon’s simple blue dress as she reached for a serving spoon.

“Oh, my sweet Shannon,” Maya whispered, her voice dropping into a soft, dramatic register.

She leaned in to press her cheek against Shannon’s, her arms wrapping around the girl’s rigid shoulders in a quick, firm embrace.

“You have grown into such a beautiful young woman,” Maya whispered, her breath close to Shannon’s ear. “I have missed your sweet voice every single day.”

Shannon flinched, her eyes widening as she pulled back from the touch, her paper plate tilting slightly in her hands.

She did not say a word, but her fingers gripped the blue beaded bracelet so hard the thin elastic string stretched to its limit.

“Excuse me,” Shannon whispered in a rapid, quiet rush, dropping her silver fork onto the linen table.

She turned and walked quickly toward the hallway leading to the restrooms, her head down and her heels clicking fast on the tile.

Maya watched her go, a small, sad smile playing on her lips as she turned back to the other guests in the line.

“She is just shy,” Maya said to Harry’s sister, Evelyn, who was watching from a few feet away with a quiet, observant look. “It takes time to rebuild what was lost.”

I watched from the end of the line, my hand tightening around a serving spoon until my knuckles turned white.

Jerome stepped up beside me, his hand resting steady on my shoulder for a brief second before he spoke.

“We have enough food for everyone, Robert,” Jerome said in his short, reassuring way. “Don’t worry about the small things.”

He was trying to keep the peace, but the air in the room was growing thin.

By eight in the evening, the main table was cleared of plates, leaving only half-empty coffee cups and the remaining bottles of red wine.
