Six Left Behind Daughters and One Returned White Box Fifteen Years Later

The midnight air was sharp with the scent of fallen maple leaves and damp earth. A light breeze stirred the wind chime hanging from the porch eave, producing a single, clear metallic note that drifted across the front yard.

Down the street, the yellow vapor lamps cast long, steady pools of light on the asphalt. No cars passed, and no phones chimed in the dark.

I stood on the top step for several minutes, watching the empty road that stretched toward the center of town. The silence of the night was no longer something I had to fight or fill with explanations.

I turned back toward the house, stepping over the threshold into the warm hallway.

I reached out and closed the hallway closet door, letting the latch click firmly into place on the empty shelf where the box used to sit.
