Six Left Behind Daughters and One Returned White Box Fifteen Years Later
My feet rested on the worn blue kitchen rug, the edges frayed from years of heavy boots and muddy sneakers.
“The Oakwood Inn called while you were at the church,” Piper said. She did not look up from her clipping. “The event manager, Sandra, said someone named Mrs. Vance called from Chicago.”
I paused with my pen over the grocery list, where I had just totaled up thirty-four dollars for the baking supplies. “Maya called the venue?”
“She changed the head table seating,” Piper said, checking her watch. “She moved the triplets to table six, and she put herself at the family table next to you.”
“She can’t do that,” I said. “I signed the contract.”
“She told Sandra she was covering the liquor liability insurance,” Piper said. She laid her scissors down with a soft metallic tap. “She already paid them three hundred dollars for the upgrade.”
I looked at the coupons scattered across the yellowed wood of the table. The small sense of security I had kept since morning began to slip away, replaced by the weight of her intrusion.
“She’s bringing Harry,” Piper added. She stared at me, her eyes narrowing with the practical suspicion she had carried since she was a little girl. “Who is Harry, Dad?”
“Her husband,” I said. “She married him twelve years ago.”
“And she thinks three hundred dollars buys her a seat next to you?” Piper asked.
“I’ll call Sandra back,” I said, though I knew the venue had already taken the money.
“Don’t let her run this, Dad,” Piper said. “She doesn’t get to buy her way back into the front row.”
She picked up the scissors again, but her fingers were tight against the plastic loops.
The heat of the afternoon lingered on the front porch by five o’clock. Jerome sat on the top step, holding a sweating glass of lemonade, his broad shoulders leaning against the wooden railing.
“Adele is worried about the photographer,” Jerome said. He placed a steadying hand on my shoulder as I sat down beside him on the warm wood. “She wants to know if there’s any way Maya can claim the rights to the pictures afterward.”
