Six Left Behind Daughters and One Returned White Box Fifteen Years Later

“I appreciate you doing this,” I said, reaching for my hat. “I just don’t want any scenes in the sanctuary.”

“There won’t be,” he said, rising to shake my hand. “We have been through enough together in this town to know how to hold a line.”

A small knot in my chest loosened, just enough for me to take a full breath of the dusty office air. I thanked him, folded the paper chart into my coat pocket, and walked out to my car.

I looked down at the floor, where the old green carpet had worn down to the black backing near the door. For years, I had believed that keeping Maya’s silence a secret would keep my family safe, but the seating chart on the desk proved that the world outside was already moving in.

The engine of my old Buick turned over with a heavy rattle, the dashboard clock showing half past nine. I sat in the parking lot for a moment, looking at the stone steps of the Methodist church where my daughters had all been baptized.

The thought of Maya walking up those same steps with a wealthy husband from Chicago made my chest tighten again. I put the car in gear and drove toward the house, the gray autumn sky hanging low over our small midwestern town.

By noon, the clouds had turned the color of wet slate, and the kitchen was dark enough that I had to switch on the overhead fluorescent bulb. Adele was already sitting at the table, a mug of herbal tea untouched in front of her.

She did not look up when I hung my coat on the peg by the door. Instead, she slid a single sheet of paper across the worn blue rug where the table met the floor.

“She sent this to my personal email address at ten this morning,” Adele said, keeping her voice in its usual calm, measured tone.

I pulled out a chair and sat down, my eyes focusing on the crisp black ink of the printout. The message was from Maya, sent from an address that ended in a corporate domain name.

“Read the second paragraph, Dad,” Adele whispered.
