My Parents Threw Me Out on Christmas—Then the Bank Saw Grandpa’s Box
Victor received formal notice three days after Christmas.
He called me six minutes later.
I watched his name flash across my phone.
I let it ring.
Then again.
Then Helena called.
Then Brielle.
Finally I answered Victor.
“What did you do?”
“Hello to you too.”
“Did you contact the board?”
“The trust did.”
Silence.
“What trust?”
“You know exactly which trust.”
Another silence.
Longer.
Then:
“Where did you hear about that?”
“Grandpa.”
Victor lowered his voice.
“Eliza.”
“What?”
“You do not understand these matters.”
“That’s why I hired people who do.”
“You hired lawyers against your own father?”
“No.”
“Henry hired them years ago.”
“I simply stopped pretending they weren’t there.”
